Imaging skins: stretchable and conformable on-organ beta particle detectors for radioguided surgery

Abstract While radioguided surgery (RGS) traditionally relied on detecting gamma rays, direct detection of beta particles could facilitate the tumour margins intraoperatively by reducing radiation noise emanating from distant organs, thereby improving signal-to-noise ratio imaging technique. In addition, most existing detectors do not offer surface sensing or capabilities. Therefore, we explore concept a stretchable scintillator to detect beta-particles emitting radiotracers that would be directly deployed targeted organ. Such detectors, which refer as skins , work indirect made light-emitting agents and biocompatible material. Our vision is scintillation using standard endoscopes routinely employed in minimally invasive surgery. Moreover, surgical robotic systems ideally used apply skins, allowing for precise control each component, positioning task repeatability. still exploratory stages, this innovative approach has potential improve during RGS enabling real-time imaging, ultimately outcomes.
